How long does it take to read The Wheel of Time?
The short answer is somewhere near three hundred hours. The useful answer is what that means for how you should approach it.
The arithmetic
The fourteen main books run to a little over four million words. At a steady two hundred and fifty words a minute, which is a fair pace for adult fiction, that works out at roughly two hundred and eighty hours of reading.
An hour every evening puts you at around nine months. Most people take longer, because most people do not read an hour every evening for nine months straight.
Where people stall
Almost everyone who abandons the series does it in the same place. Books eight through ten are where the plot threads multiply and the pace drops, and the common advice is to push through rather than pause, because a break taken there tends to become permanent.
If you are going to schedule anything, schedule a lighter book after book seven and treat the middle as a stretch to be crossed rather than savoured.
Audiobook changes the maths
The full series runs well past four hundred hours narrated, which sounds worse but usually is not. Listening time comes out of commutes and chores rather than out of evenings, so a lot of readers who stall in print finish on audio.
Planning a run at it
Treat it as a year. Read the books in publication order, do not skip the prequel until the end, and accept that you will lose a week here and there.
One small thing makes a disproportionate difference over that stretch: knowing exactly where you stopped. Nine months of reading is long enough that a placeholder falling out of a nine-hundred-page hardback costs you a genuinely irritating half hour.
