The gothic designs that survive being shrunk to bookmark size are architectural. A spire, an arch, a gate, a row of headstones. They are built from strong silhouettes, so they stay legible.
Detailed horror art does the opposite. A beautifully rendered creature at print size becomes a smudge at two inches. If you want horror specifically rather than gothic, look for one bold shape and a limited palette.
What to pair it with
Classic gothic, Dracula and Frankenstein and the Brontes, takes the cathedral and graveyard designs. Modern horror takes the starker ones. For gothic fantasy, the vampire and reaper designs sit in the middle and work for both.
