Gifts for Percy Jackson fans

The Riordanverse is now past twenty books across five series, and the people reading it range from nine years old to thirty-five.

Two very different readers

There are two Percy Jackson audiences and they want different things. The first is a child or teenager working through the books for the first time, usually fast, usually out of order because the library had what it had. The second is an adult who read them at the right age and has quietly kept up ever since.

The younger reader wants something that signals the books to their friends. The older one wants something that does not look like merchandise. Greek myth imagery satisfies both, which is why it is the safe direction here.

The imagery that works

Swords, the sea, and anything celestial. Riptide is the single most recognisable object in the series, and the ocean runs through all five books as Percy's domain. Both read as handsome fantasy design to anyone who has not read the books, which is exactly what you want from a gift that has to survive the reader growing up.

Lightning bolts and owls are the next tier, pulling in Zeus and Athena without being specific to any one character.

Why this series in particular suits a bookmark

Riordan readers are serial readers. They finish the five Olympians books and go straight into the Kane Chronicles, then Magnus Chase, then the Trials of Apollo. There is almost never a gap.

That continuity is the argument. A bookmark bought for book three is still in use at book nineteen, which is not something you can say about most gifts bought for a twelve year old.

Something to hold your place
