Dune reading order
Read Frank Herbert's six books in publication order: Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, Chapterhouse: Dune. Skip the prequels until you have finished those.
The only six books Herbert wrote. Everything else is by other hands.
- Dune1965
- Dune Messiah1969Deliberately dismantles book one. Shorter and stranger.
- Children of Dune1976
- God Emperor of Dune1981The one people quit on. Also the one some readers rank first.
- Heretics of Dune1984
- Chapterhouse: Dune1985Ends on a cliffhanger Herbert died before resolving.
Why the order is argued about
The prequels and sequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson are often sold in chronological box sets that put the Butlerian Jihad books first. Starting there is the single most common Dune mistake. They explain mysteries the original is built on withholding.
Read the six originals first. Decide afterward whether you want more.

Questions readers ask
Should I read the Dune prequels first?
No. They spoil the original and were written decades later by different authors.
Is it fine to read only Dune?
Yes. Dune works as a standalone. Messiah changes how you read it, which is the point.
How many Dune books did Frank Herbert write?
Six, from Dune in 1965 to Chapterhouse: Dune in 1985.
